Article Summary:
This article discussed the progression of a multimedia education class as it was first offered at a university. In many ways, I felt like this article covered ideas that were already included in some of the previous articles. The author tells about teachers who must change their expectations and open their minds to new ways of teaching once they are introduced to multimedia educational experiences. Then, he goes on to discuss some of the skills and programs taught in the class - PowerPoint, Photoshop, movie editing. Finally, he gives some words of warning about not letting technology rule the classroom for the sake of technology, and he stresses the importance of continuing to have the teacher remain the key facilitator of learning in the classroom.
Article Review:
As I said before, this article touched on ideas already covered in previous articles, so I don't have a lot to contribute. Yes, I agree - technology is a wonderful new tool to utilize in the classroom. Students today do indeed need to learn how to harness technology since it now reaches into almost every part of our lives. Students can also learn in new and exciting ways by incorporating technology in order to teach previously text-book based elementary and high school classes. However, the importance of the teacher will always remain. It doesn't matter if the biology teacher can show their classroom 60 minutes of HD 1080P wildlife footage that they shot and edited together themselves. Sure it might be really cool and entertaining, but it doesn't mean anything if the students don't learn. Technology will always need to be a supplement to student learning, it should not overshadow it.
